Fit and Molding
How do I fit my AIRWAAV mouthpiece?
Each model has its own step-by-step guide on the Fitting & Usage page: PX1, PX2 and RX1. Follow the molding instructions exactly. PX1 is a custom fit in 60 seconds, and PX2 and the Hybrid Pack take 90 seconds. For RX1, heat it in the microwave for about 90 seconds, then bite and mold it for about 5 minutes.
I'm a first-time user. What should I know?
It can take a little time to get used to a mouthpiece. Start by following the molding instructions exactly, then use the implementation guide on the Fitting & Usage page to work it into your routine. Frequent early use helps you adapt faster. Try wearing it during everyday activities such as household chores or walks, so your brain gets used to it and you feel comfortable sooner during training.
Where do I put my tongue?
Performance mouthpieces (PX1 and PX2): position your tongue forward, beneath the front intake bar, which sits just behind your teeth. Your tongue should rest below the bar, not on top of it.
Recovery mouthpiece (RX1): you do not need to place your tongue under the bar. Let your tongue move forward naturally. For many people the tongue presses against the roof of the mouth during sleep, and that is fine.
What if the mouthpiece feels too large for my mouth?
AIRWAAV improves airflow in the pharyngeal area, which benefits both nasal and mouth breathing. During less intense exercise, inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. As intensity increases, shift to mouth breathing.
Product and Protection
How is AIRWAAV different from other mouthpieces?
AIRWAAV is built on 15 years of research and development and is backed by peer-reviewed studies. It holds a patent and supports both strength and conditioning work. It also supports recovery by reducing bodily strain and lowering cortisol levels. AIRWAAV launched in 2020, building on mouthpiece technology developed since the early 2000s.
What is AIRWAAV made of?
AIRWAAV uses a patented, BPA-free, hydrophobic material. You heat it to mold it, and it shrinks slightly afterward for a snug fit on your teeth. The RX1 material is also latex-free and phthalate-free.
Can I wear AIRWAAV for training, competition or contact sports?
AIRWAAV is designed to support your training in any sport. For non-contact sports, wearing it in both training and competition is recommended to potentially improve performance.
AIRWAAV is not protective gear and does not protect your teeth from impact in contact sports. For those activities, use a protective mouthguard made for impact protection, such as the AIRWAAV GX1 Protective Mouth Guard. AIRWAAV is best suited to training for contact-sport athletes, so they can train at their highest potential.
Can I use the same mouthpiece for training and for sleep?
No. Use the model made for each purpose. The RX1 Recovery mouthpiece is engineered for overnight wear and is not intended for working out or training. The PX1 Performance mouthpiece is built for active use and is not designed for overnight wear.
Is the RX1 a medical device?
No. AIRWAAV RX1 Recovery is not a medical device and should not be used to treat any medical condition. Talk to your physician before starting a new personal care routine, and never disregard medical advice. Stop using it right away if you notice any negative effects. If you are under a doctor's care for sleep, treat the RX1 as a comfort and recovery tool and keep your physician involved.
How do I clean my mouthpiece?
Rinse your mouthpiece and its case under running water, apply 3 pumps of AIRWAAV Mouthpiece Cleaner, and let both air dry for at least 60 seconds. Clean them at least once a week.
How long does a mouthpiece last?
Plan on about 4 to 6 months per mouthpiece with regular use. How long it lasts depends on how often you use it and how much you clench. Replace it when it loosens or shows wear.
What guarantee comes with my purchase?
Every AIRWAAV Performance and Recovery mouthpiece is backed by a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. If you are not satisfied, AIRWAAV will replace it free of charge or refund you for up to 30 days from the delivery date. Each customer is eligible for one replacement.
AIRWAAV includes a warranty against product defects. It is not a traditional dental warranty like those that come with athletic mouthguards, because AIRWAAV is not designed for contact-sport protection.
Sizing and Braces
Can I wear AIRWAAV with braces?
Yes. If you have braces, AIRWAAV recommends the PX1 Performance model. Its wider bite channel fits better with braces. The RX1 Recovery mouthpiece may not be the right fit if you wear full upper and lower braces.
What is the difference between the PX1 and the PX2?
The PX1 has an open bite channel and a relaxed, minimal feel, for athletes who prefer a relaxed fit. The PX2 has a narrow bite channel with form-fitting bars and a snug fit, and it is listed as best for heavy clenchers. The Performance Hybrid Pack lets you try both fits.
Which model is right for me?
It depends on your goal. The PX1 and PX2 are for training and sport, and the RX1 is for sleep. Between the two performance models, choose the PX1 if you prefer a relaxed fit or have braces, and the PX2 if you prefer a snug fit or clench heavily.
If you are not sure, take the AIRWAAV quiz to be matched to a model in under a minute, or start with the Hybrid Pack to try both fits.
What ages is the RX1 Recovery mouthpiece for?
The RX1 works for ages 11 and up. It may not be the right fit if you are under 11 or wear full upper and lower braces.
